The Whole
Shebang : A State-Of-The-Universe(s) Report
by Timothy Ferris
Science Editor's Recommended Book
Plenty of books try to explain the origin of the universe, but despite the
ascendance of the Big Bang theory, numerous details of that theory remain in flux as new
observations are made and new hypotheses formed (and then confirmed or rejected). Timothy
Ferris's The Whole Shebang is an up-to-date account of the various mechanisms
believed to have contributed to the universe as we now know it, from the Big Bang
itself to inflation to superstrings. The Whole Shebang eschews mathematics
and formulae and explains cosmological concepts in clear and enticing prose. If you
need an update on the state of the universe, you'll find it here.

Parallel
Universes: The Search for Other Worlds by Fred Alan Wolf
Reader's comments: dhane@mother.com , 07/05/97, rating=8:
Beginner's book on quantum physics
A great book for beginners and enthusiasts on the subject of quantum
physics/theory. Mr. Wolf provides clear, well-thought-out examples of the various theories
which support parallel universes and the implications they may have
on this one. He also provides a brief description of the history of
our understanding of the quantum world. This book is a must read for anyone who
finds themself thinking just a bit differently than everyone else.

How the Mind
Works by Steven Pinker
Amazon.com: Why do fools fall in love? Why does a man's
annual salary, on average, increase $600 with each inch of his height? When a crack
dealer guns down a rival, how is he just like Alexander Hamilton, whose face is on the
ten-dollar bill? How do optical illusions function as windows on the human
soul? Cheerful, cheeky, occasionally outrageous MIT psychologist Steven Pinker
answers all of the above and more in his marvelously fun, awesomely informative survey of
modern brain science. Pinker argues that Darwin plus canny computer programs are the
key to understanding ourselves -- but he also throws in apt references to Star Trek, Star
Wars, The Far Side, history, literature, W. C. Fields, Mozart, Marilyn Monroe, surrealism,
experimental psychology, and Moulay Ismail the Bloodthirsty and his 888 children. If
How the Mind Works were a rock show, tickets would be scalped for $100. This
book deserves its honor of reaching number one on bestseller lists. It belongs on a
short shelf alongside such classics as Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the
Meanings of Life, by Daniel C. Dennett, and The Moral Animal: Why We Are the Way We
Are: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology, by Robert Wright. Pinker's startling
ideas pop out as dramatically as those hidden pictures in a Magic Eye 3D stereogram
poster, which he also explains in brilliantly lucid prose.

And the
Waters Turned to Blood: The Ultimate Biological Threat by
Rodney Barker
Amazon.com: Don't drink the water. Don't swim in it,
fish in it, or even bathe in it. Rodney Barker's book, And the Waters Turned
to Blood details the latest plague to visit our shores: Pfiesteria
piscicida, the "cell from hell," an aquatic microorganism that causes sufferers
to exhibit symptoms similar to Alzheimers or multiple sclerosis. As it follows the
fortunes of Dr. JoAnn Burkholder, one of the first scientists to recognize the danger of
Pfiesteria, Barker's book reads like a cross between science fiction and conspiracy
theory: Dr. Burkholder discovers that excessive pollution in the rivers and coastal waters
of the Southeastern United States causes a deadly microorganism to breed like crazy; state
and federal government attempts to suppress the report.
An investigative reporter by training, Mr. Barker writes And the
Waters Turned to Blood like a thriller, revealing pieces of the puzzle judiciously as
he builds tension. Unlike in a literary thriller, however, there is no tidy ending
to this story. Readers will be left with the disturbing knowledge that fish are
still dying, fishermen are still getting sick, and the potential for disaster in this
latest scourge is still unmeasured.

Chaos: Making a
New Science by James Gleick
Amazon.com: Few writers distinguish themselves by their
ability to write about complicated, even obscure topics clearly and engagingly.
James Gleick, a former science writer for the New York Times, resides in this exclusive
category. In Chaos, he takes on the job of depicting the first years of the
study of chaos -- the seemingly random patterns that characterize many natural
phenomena.
This is not a purely technical book. Instead, it focuses as much
on the scientists studying chaos as on the chaos itself. In the pages of Gleick's
book, the reader meets dozens of extraordinary and eccentric people. For instance,
Mitchell Feigenbaum, who constructed and regulated his life by a 26-hour clock and watched
his waking hours come in and out of phase with those of his coworkers at Los Alamos
National Laboratory.
Synopsis: James Gleick explains the theories behind the
fascinating new science called chaos. Alongside relativity and quantum mechanics, it is
being hailed as the twentieth century's third revolution. 8 pages of photos.
