Statement
Aug-27-98
Several days ago, our nation took a bold step to declare war on terrorism
throughout the world. I agreed with our military and intelligence
communities
that this attack was a necessity. When it comes to fighting terrorism,
I
believe even more aggressive steps should be taken.
It is often said that partisanship ends at the shores of our nation.
I completely
concur in this sentiment. However, the recent decision by President
Clinton
to attack terrorists was viewed by a large minority, 4 out of 10 Americans,
as having something to do with the crisis in the White House. Clearly,
this
was not the case, because our military and our intelligence communities
would not have allowed such to occur.
This does, however, dramatically make a very serious and disturbing
point. Because the President lied to the American people, Congress,
and
many of his own staff for more than seven months, the American people
simply do not trust President Clinton.
Today, if a crisis occurred in Iraq, Korea, or wherever in the world,
would
the American people believe the President's response is connected to
his
domestic problems? If the recent attack is any indication, the
American
people would. If President Clinton had to act, would he act in
the same
manner if he was not involved in a domestic scandal? We do not
know, but
we do know our nation cannot take the chance. We deserve better.
Our
military deserves better.
The response of the outlaws in the Sudan to the cruise missile attack
also underlines how President Clinton and our nation have been hurt
by the
President's domestic scandal. This scandal gave an opening to
these outlaws
to attack President Clinton on this very domestic scandal. How
many other
leaders throughout the world were thinking the same thing?
President Clinton is crippled. Because he lied, our people can
no longer
believe him. Because this scandal has resulted in a political
crisis for the
President, the world no longer respects him. Because he lied,
our nation
is exposed at a very critical time. For these reasons, at least,
President Clinton
must resign. We simply cannot afford the paralysis...the distrust...and
the loss
of respect this crisis has brought. Rest assured, things will
not get better for
the President. Rather, this crisis will only deepen and our nation
will be in greater peril.
Finally, for those who wish to blame everyone else for this loss of
respect and
growth of distrust, I simply say that no one is to blame but President
Clinton.
It is his actions...his words...and his failure to be truthful with
the American
public that has caused this problem and this crisis.
Mr. President, put our country first...it is time for you to resign. |
