About the USGenWeb Project
The USGenWeb Project was established in April 1996 to provide a single entry point for locating genealogical data in the counties in the United States. At that time, while genealogical data was appearing on the internet, it was not organized in any cohesive or organized way.
The USGenWeb Project, maintained by volunteers across the country, organized collections of genealogical data by states, and the counties within each state. Each county had a coordinator responsible for collecting and maintaining a site of resources that were available for that county. The goal was and is to put genealogical records on the Internet, accessible and free to all.
I am Diana Holland Faust and I was the coordinator for Wayne County, North Carolina, GenWeb since I first published this site in November 1996, until I turned it back over to NCGenWeb in November 2001. During the five years that I was the coordinator for Wayne county, many users of the site generously donated their data, and I posted it here to share with others. After five years of coordinating this site, I turned it -- the pages I developed and the data many of you donated -- over to North Carolina's state coordinator, so that I could devote more of my time to pursuing my own genealogy. The Wayne County GenWeb site was moved to a different server and the links to it from NCGenWeb were changed to that new location. These "abandoned" pages, or so I thought, remained where they were and many of you kept coming to them and sending information, so I continued to add it and keep the pages online. While no longer affiliated with or a part of NCGenWeb, this site is still Wayne County, North Carolina's Genealogy site!
Volunteers are still as welcome as ever to transcribe public and private records for inclusion in the archives. Contributions of family data are likewise welcome. If you have any information about Wayne County that could appropriately be included here or have family records you could contribute, please email me. Read our Message Board to find out what projects are underway and how you can get involved.
About Wayne County
Wayne County was created in 1779, when it was formed from the western half of Dobbs County. Twelve years later, in 1791, the remainder of Dobbs County was divided into Lenoir and Glasgow (Greene after 1799), and Dobbs County thus ceased to exist. The early records of Dobbs County were destroyed when the Lenoir County Court House was burned in 1878. Wayne County was named for Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne (called "Mad Anthony"), hero of the Battle of Fallen Timbers. It is in the eastern part of North Carolina and is surrounded by Johnston, Wilson, Greene, Lenoir, Duplin, and Sampson counties.
