Sallie Bell Reagan of Duplin, Wayne County, and Pitt Counties

Sallie Bell Reagan

My great-grandmother, Sallie Bell, b. 1902, lived in Dudley, just outside of Mt. Olive, Wayne
County, N.C. Her parents were Mr. Davis L. Bell (son of Felix Bell and Mary Adeline Ezzell Bell of
Faison, Duplin County, N.C.) and Minnie Farrior Bell. She graduated from Mount Olive High
School on June 18, 1919, according to:

1. her diploma;
2. a white & gold porcelin statuette of a female in graduation cap & gown; and
3. her gold, black onyx high school ring dated 1919.

After she graduated from high school she taught one school year, 1919-1920, at a school in Mt.
Olive, N.C. Upon getting married to a Mr. Bratha Mott Reagan of Goldsboro, on June 2, 1920, she
resigned from being a teacher. Sallie Bell had a double wedding ceremony at the Methodist
Minister's home in Goldsboro.

The couple who married along with Sallie and Bratha were their friends who introducted them, Ed
Jennette and Viola Boyd. Mr. & Mrs. B. M. Reagan moved with the Jennettes to New Bern, N.C.
where they opened a barber and beauty shop. It was the first "beauty shop" to exist in downtown
New Bern. In 1929, they moved to Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina and opened the De
Luxe Beauty & Barber Shop downtown.

Although Sallie Bell Reagan lived in Pitt County, she visited relatives and friends in the Duplin
County area often. A few of those people were Gladys Lambert Jernigan, Vivian Bell Price, Kate
Merrit, David Lane, Viola Boyd Jennette.

In the Pictures section of this website are some photos that Terri Bell provided of who she
believes to be the students at the Mount Olive school where Sallie Bell taught in 1919.
