Cemetery transcription contributed by David E. Casey August 2000
Note from Phil Ham: According to Mary's niece, the land for this cemetery was given via a land grant from James Jones' mother who was a Summerlin and a full Choctaw Indian. I am 77 years old and have always heard it referred to as the Summerlin Cemetery. E. Phil Ham pandmham@hotmail.com November 2002
Note from Daniel Mitchell: As a descendant of Seany James Mitchell
Summerlin, I have the correct information on the land for the James-Summerlin
Cemetery. James Jones: his mother was Clyde Summerlin, her parents
were: Phelix L. Summerlin from Duplin and Scena James Mitchell from Brogdin.
The land was purchased by Charity (Chellie) Williams James, with the money she
received from the Civil War, Widows Pension Fund, her husband was John J. James
from Duplin, he was killed in the war. The cemetery was established while
Charity (Cehllie) James was alive, it was then and is now the James Cemetery,
Charity ( Chellie) James deeded the property to her daughter Scena and her
husband Phelix Summerlin.
Phelix and Scena had ten children, when they passed the land was divided between
the Summerlin children, because of this, the cemetery became known as the
Summerlin Cemetery, when in fact it was the James Cemetery.
Clyde Summerlin was not a Choctaw Indian, they were out west back in the 1700's,
her grand-mother Charity (Chellie) Williams James was a full blooded Indian, her
family was either from the Waccamaw Tribe or the Tuscarora Tribe.
If I can share any other information, please ask. Daniel E. Mitchell
