Lessons include Where to Begin?, What's in a Name?, Using Technology to Dig for Roots, Death Records, Marriage Records, Birth Records, What Is the Question?, Misspeld Knames, and Census Records, there are tips and links to resources at RootsWeb and elsewhere on the Internet that will be useful for all.

Online educational facilities are open 24 hours a day for students to learn how to research their ancestors, build web pages, edit images, and do research online.

Virtual University (VU)  "Introduction to Online Genealogy'' is an eight-week workshop course is designed to teach students how to use various Internet tools such as e-mail, Telnet, FTP, and search engines to access Usenet newsgroups, online databases, web sites and various other online resources of interest to genealogists.  These in-depth classes also will teach you how to research your family tree and use the new technology to its fullest.

Marthe Arends -- a writer, editor, lecturer and instructor specializing in computer genealogy at Bellevue (WA) Community College teaches the course. Experienced at teaching genealogy classes on the Internet, she has developed ways to handle her large class loads. One method that works well is to divide the class into study groups for various topics and let the members help each other.

The course is repeated periodically.  Check the calendar for courses offered at Virtural U. and the schedule at http://www.vu.org/channels.html

The International Internet Genealogical Society University -- http://www.iigs.org/ -- recently opened its virtual doors with a number of genealogically related classes available -- all free. They include:

-- U.S. Land & Property Records
-- Beginning U.S. Research
-- Tracing Mormon Pioneers
-- Genealogical Research in Virginia (and other states)
-- Lumbee and Southeastern American Indian Research
