Female College in Goldsboro

Female College

Built in 1854 on William Street, the four story brick building housed the Wayne Female College until 1862.  It was closed that year because of the outbreak of the War Between the States.  It became a Confederate Army hospital, and in 1865, a hospital for the Union soldiers after the Battle of Bentonville and during the occupation of Goldsboro.  In 1868, it was returned to its owners, and reopened in the fall of 1868 as Goldsboro Female College.  After 1881, it became the first Goldsboro Public School.  The building was used for various school grades until it was closed permanently in 1827 and torn down.
