The will of Woodard D. Holland. was filed in Wayne County in the August term of 1853.  Wayne County Wills - August 7, 1853, Bk. R11, p. 340, file 571. 

State of North Carolina                      May the 28th 
Wayne County                                    1853 

I, Woodard Holland, calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and the certainty of death, do make and publish this to be my last will and testament in the following manner and form 
to wit: 

Item. I give and bequeath to my son James Holland my Billy Gun to him and his heirs for Ever. 

I give to my sons James Holland and Rural A. Holland my boy Dick.  Rural A. Holland to have a hundred dollars more than James Holland of his value the said James and Rural A. Holland to pay into my Estate two Hundred Dollars before they receive him. 

Item. I lend to my Daughter Nicy Smith her life time one Negro called Rene and then the Negro and her increase I give to Nicy's children for Ever. 

I give and bequeath to my son Mack Campbell Holland one Negro called Simon to him and his heirs for Ever by his paying two hundred dollars into my Estate before he receives him. 

I give to my son Rural A. Holland all the land I bought of Hillery Camel & wife to him and his heirs for Ever. 

Item.  I Give and bequeath to my son Exum Hawood Holland all the land I bought of Larry Peacock and took a deed of Barney Peacock which will divide nearly north and south with the hog Sow Bush on the deans dung hill nearly south to the road and then the ditch on to him and his heirs for Ever.  Also I give him my Negro Edney By his paying one hundred and fifty Dollars into my Estate before he receive her. 

Item.  I lend to my Daughter Patience Holland my Negro called Chance [or Chane] her life time and then I give Chane and her increase to Patience's children for Ever.  Also I give her five hundred dollars. 

Item.  I lend to my Daughter Elizabeth Holland one Negro called Milly her life time and then I give her Milly's increase to Elizabeth's children.  I also Give her five hundred dollars. 

Item.  I lend to my beloved wife my home plantation and my two Negroes Litha and Handy [or Hardy ] Except what land I have Given off to Rural A. Holland and Exum Hawood Holland to her her lifetime or widowhood.  I also Give her my legacy in Elisha Holland Estate that I bought of William W. Peacock and wife Candis Peacock and the land warrant in the hands of Eli Holland for Ever. 

After settling my Estate I lend to my beloved wife all of my property of Every Description Except what I have given away or may have after give away to her her life time or widowhood. 

After my wife life time or widowhood I give my home plantation Except what I give to Rural A. Holland & Exum Hawood Holland to my son Wooddard Holland for Ever.  Also the two Negroes Litha And Handy I give to him and his heirs for Ever after my wife lifetime or widow. 

I Give my wife the liberty to make up to her five youngest children schooling stock and house property as she sees proper out of the property I lend her. 

I give to my son Wooddard Holland one Negro Girl called Violet one silver watch lethem trunk and short rifle called his for Ever. 

I Give my wife the liberty to give my Granddaughter Sela Smith one feather Bed and furniture one cow and calf. 

I leave John W. Sheand and James Holland Executors to this my last will and testament with power to settle it as they think right.

Notes: 

Woodard D. Holland was the 3rd child of Elisha Holland and Patience Watkins, 
born 6 November 1794 in North Carolina.  He died in Wayne County, NC, in 1853.
